Samsung PL20 and ES80 Announced

Samsung has announced a pair of budget-friendly compact cameras in the new PL20 and ES80.

The PL20 sports a 14MP sensor and 5x optical zoom lens (27-135mm equivalent).    The PL20 also captures 720p HD video at 24fps.  The Samsung PL20 should be available in March at an initial retail price of $119.99.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

The ES80 is a 12MP basic point and shoot camera with a 5x optical zoom lens (27-135mm equivalent).  The Samsung ES80 carries an initial retail price of $99.99 and should be available in April.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS, ELPH 500 HS, ELPH 300 HS and ELPH 100 HS Announced

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is a new 12.1MP camera that is powered by Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor.  The SX230 HS sports a 14x zoom lens (approx. 28-392mm equivalent) with image stabilization, along with a 3-inch LCD.  Additionally, the SX230 HS can capture 1080p HD video as well as super slow motion video.

The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS should be available in March at an initial retail price of $349.99.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

In addition to the SX230 HS, Canon has also announced several new PowerShot ELPH models – the ELPH 500 HS, ELPH 300 HS and ELPH 100 HS.

Sony HX9V and HX100V Announced

The oft-rumored HX9V and HX100V are now official as Sony’s latest Cyber-shot models. Both camera feature 16.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensors and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization.

The Sony Cyber-shot HX9V sports a 16x optical zoom lens with a 24mm equivalent wide-angle field of view.  The HX100V is a superzoom model with 30x optical zoom, which starts a 27mm on the wide end.  Both models offer a max sensitivity up to ISO 3200 and capture Full HD 1080p video at 60p.

The HX9V and HX100V feature 3-inch touchscreen displays with a 921k-dot resolution.  Of course, both models offer Sony’s signature 3D Sweep Panorama mode for easy panoramic images.  Both cameras should be available in April 2011.

Along with the HX9V and HX100V, Sony also unveiled the no-frills Cyber-shot W520, which sports a 14.1MP sensor, 5x zoom lens and 2.7-inch LCD.  The W520 is set for March 2011 availability.

Sony WX10 Hands-On Review

Ricoh CX5 Announced

The Ricoh CX5 is a new point and shoot camera with a 10.7x optical zoom lens (28-300mm equivalent) and a 10MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor.  The CX5 sports a new hybrid AF system that Ricoh says reduces AF focusing times down to 0.2 seconds.  The hybrid AF system is made up of “a passive AF sensor that continuously measures the distance between the camera and subject using an area sensor together with Contrast AF (a system in which the imaging elements search for the peak location for contrast on the subject and focus on that location).”

The CX5 also offers a continuous shooting speed of 5fps at full resolution, a sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, 720p HD video capture and a 3-inch LCD at 920k dot resolution.  No word yet on pricing or release date.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

Panasonic Lumix ZS8 and ZS10

The Panasonic Lumix ZS8 and Lumix ZS10 are new 14MP point and shoot cameras.

The ZS8 features a CCD image sensor, 3-inch 230k dot LCD, 720p HD video capture and a 16x zoom lens.  The ZS10 steps up to a CMOS image sensor, 430k dot res LCD and 3D image capture.

Olympus SP-610UZ

The Olympus SP-610UZ is the successor to the SP-600UZ.  The SP-610UZ offers a 22x zoom lens (28-616mm equivalent), which is up from 15x zoom on the SP-600UZ, and image stabilization built-in.  Other upgrades include a 14MP sensor (up from 12MP) and a 3-inch LCD (up from 2.7-inch).

The SP-610UZ captures 720p video and is compatible with SDXC memory cards.  The SP-610UZ should be available in February at an initial retail price of $229.99.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

Panasonic Lumix FH27 and FH25

The Panasonic Lumix FH27 and FH25 are new 16.1MP cameras featuring 8x optical zoom lenses.  The FH27 has a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, while the FH25 features a non-touch 2.7-inch LCD.  Both cameras allow capture of 720p HD video.  Price and release dates will be announced at a later date.
