Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4 VR II Lens Patent

September 23, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Nikon 70-200mm f4 VR II

A lens missing from Nikon’s lineup recently appeared in a published patent application at the USPTO.  Canon’s 70-200mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses have been popular lenses over the past few years.  The original f/4L was so popular that Canon decided to make an IS version and keep both lenses in the lineup.

Now, it looks like Nikon will be jumping on this popular lens size… [Read more…]

Editing Sony NEX-5n 60p Footage in Final Cut Pro X

September 22, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-5n

The more I use the new Sony NEX-5n, the more I like it (notwithstanding the clicking problem).  One thing that really makes the NEX-5n stand out among competitors is the ability to capture HD video at 1080/60p (i.e., 59.94 progressive frames per second).  This makes for smooth motion, but also gives you the option to conform to footage to a slower frame rate and get some cool slow motion in your 24p projects.

With the recent update to Final Cut Pro X, I was hoping that Apple would add support for additional codecs, like the relatively new (yet, increasingly popular) AVCHD 2.0; however, it did not.  As a result, working with video from cameras shooting 60p AVCHD 2.0 footage (like the Sony NEX-5n) brings a bit of a problem when importing the files from your camera.

I’ve already covered how to import AVCHD files into Final Cut Pro X; however, working with AVCHD 2.0 files at 60p requires another step to get the footage into FCP X.  Still yet, it’s not so bad. [Read more…]

Canon’s big tease has sparked a lot of commentary and speculation about what’s coming on its November 3rd announcement.  While there are sure to be plenty of rumors, and maybe some leaks as we lead up to the big date, a GTC forum member apparently claimed to see the camera and its specs.

The rumored specs include two mount options – Canon EF mount and a PL mount.  Additionally, the leakster claims that the camera sports a Super35 4K sensor.

RED Goes Head-to-Head with Canon’s Big Nov. 3 Announcement

September 21, 2011 By Eric Reagan

RED Scarlet

It’s no secret that Canon is announcing something big on November 3.  That “something” is expected to be some kind of pro-level cinema camera.  Of course, we won’t know for sure until Nov. 3.

However, RED apparently knows enough to go head-to-head with Canon’s announcement.  Jarred Land (aka Fire Chief at RED) posted news yesterday that RED’s Scarlet will ship before the end of the year.  The RED faithful then exploded with follow-up posts seeking more details. [Read more…]
