Canon has officially announced the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens. It is the first lens with Canon’s newly-developed Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics (BR Optics), which uses organic material to “achieve a higher level of chromatic aberration correction than other existing technologies.” [Read more…]
The new Panasonic Lumix GX8 is now shipping from retailers. The Micro Four Thirds format GX8 features a 20.3MP sensor and captures 4K video at 24/30p. The camera retails for $1200. Check it out here at B&H Photo.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 Patent Diagram
A recently published patent application from Canon reveals the development of new 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses, which use similar optical formulas. We know the new EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens is due any day now but a 50mm f/1.4 lens hasn’t really been on the radar even though the current EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens is getting quite old. [Read more…]
A pair of recently published patent applications reveal updated versions of the Nikon 1 10mm f/2.8 lens and the Nikon 1 10-100mm f/4-5.6 VR lens.
The 10mm f/2.8 patent was filed back in March, while the 10-100mm f/4-5.6 VR lens patent was filed in late April. These are probably a couple of the more popular 1-Series lenses, so a replacement at some point makes sense.
As always, don’t take a patent filing as evidence of an impending announcement. It’s just something to keep on your radar.

The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM has been expected for a few weeks now after a reference to the lens leaked out through a Russian certification agency. An image of the lens has now surfaced at Digicame-info, which usually means a product is only days (or maybe hours) away from an official announcement. This new lens will serve as a replacement to the current EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens.
Leaked specs note that the lens features 14 elements in 11 groups with a nine blade circular aperture and a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m. It takes a 72mm filter and measures 105.5mm long with a 80.4mm diameter. Weight is 760g and it will use the Canon EW-77B lens hood.
Expect the official announcement to come along very shortly. Given the $1479 retail price of the current model, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the new model priced close to (or a little over) the $2k mark.
Also, we may get the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens that was leaked earlier alongside the new 35mm lens. Stay tuned.
Olympus has announced its new OM-D E-M10 Mark II mirrorless camera as a follow-up to the original E-M10. The biggest addition to the new camera is the inclusion of 5-axis image stabilization in the body. We’ve seen this on higher end models, but it now reaches the entry-level E-M10 Mark II. [Read more…]
