Canon USA has announced that EOS M3 will officially arrive in the US in October as the latest mirrorless camera in a line that has had a rocky start thus far. The United States never saw an official version of the EOS M2; however, plenty of gray market cameras made their way over here. [Read more…]
Instagram Steps Outside the Box, Allows Non-Square Photos & Videos
Instagram is singlehandedly responsible for the resurgence of the square format photo. It’s the reason we have a square photo template available in the iPhone camera app.
And now, Instagram is opening its doors to non-square formats. So, finally, we don’t have to squeeze a landscape or portrait image into a square frame. With this new version, you can share photos and videos with aspect ratios between 1.91:1 and 4:5. [Read more…]

Victoria’s Secret Showing Off the Leica M7 Alongside Underwear
As I was walking past Victoria’s Secret in the mall yesterday, one of the window displays jumped out at me. “Hey, that’s a Leica M7!”
Unfortunately, they didn’t have any in stock. I bet they didn’t think the camera would be turning the heads though… [Read more…]
New Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 & 35mm f/1.4 Lenses Revealed in Patent

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 Patent Diagram
A recently published patent application from Canon reveals the development of new 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses, which use similar optical formulas. We know the new EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens is due any day now but a 50mm f/1.4 lens hasn’t really been on the radar even though the current EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens is getting quite old. [Read more…]
Nikon 1 Updated 10mm f/2.8 and 10-100mm f/4-5.6 Lens Patents
A pair of recently published patent applications reveal updated versions of the Nikon 1 10mm f/2.8 lens and the Nikon 1 10-100mm f/4-5.6 VR lens.
The 10mm f/2.8 patent was filed back in March, while the 10-100mm f/4-5.6 VR lens patent was filed in late April. These are probably a couple of the more popular 1-Series lenses, so a replacement at some point makes sense.
As always, don’t take a patent filing as evidence of an impending announcement. It’s just something to keep on your radar.

New Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM Leaks Out Ahead of Official Launch
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM has been expected for a few weeks now after a reference to the lens leaked out through a Russian certification agency. An image of the lens has now surfaced at Digicame-info, which usually means a product is only days (or maybe hours) away from an official announcement. This new lens will serve as a replacement to the current EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens.
Leaked specs note that the lens features 14 elements in 11 groups with a nine blade circular aperture and a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m. It takes a 72mm filter and measures 105.5mm long with a 80.4mm diameter. Weight is 760g and it will use the Canon EW-77B lens hood.
Expect the official announcement to come along very shortly. Given the $1479 retail price of the current model, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the new model priced close to (or a little over) the $2k mark.
Also, we may get the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens that was leaked earlier alongside the new 35mm lens. Stay tuned.
