Panasonic Micro Four Thirds Camcorder is Looking Pretty Sweet

June 22, 2010 By Eric Reagan

That’s the new Panasonic Micro Four Thirds AG-AF100 AVCCAM camcorder up there.

Interchangeable lenses? Check.

Big sensor? Check

I think Panasonic is going to make a whole of friends with this one. To see all the goods that were just spilled, courtesy of a product brochure from Panasonic, head on over to Tech Tilt.

The Best Camera Coming to Android Phones

June 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

I sat down to watch the Chase Jarvis and Zack Arias live interview session late one night last week.  While I watched a recorded version of it, they were taking Twitter questions during the live stream.  One question asked Chase whether The Best Camera app would be coming to Android.  I don’t recall his exact words, but Chase’s response made it clear that The Best Camera is in the works for Android.  No details of availability dates were spilled, and really, the comments about the app were just for a few seconds, but it appears to be on the way nonetheless.

I’m not sure where the video was at when Chase discussed this (it’s probably in the last 45 minutes or so), but feel free to add the time stamp in the comments if you catch it.

How to Create a Canon 18-55mm SuperMacro Lens

June 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

This is a pretty intense video that documents the disassembly and resurrection of a cheap Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens into a SuperMacro version of the same lens.  It’s not for the faint of heart.

Samsung NX10 Review

June 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Samsung NX10 is 14.6-megapixel camera offering an interchangeable lens design.  The NX10 follows the Micro Four Thirds system from Olympus and Panasonic as a DSLR-like design without a bulky mirror and optical viewfinder.  The NX10 uses a larger APS-C format sensor (with a 1.6x crop factor) as opposed to the Micro Four Thirds cameras (with smaller, 2x crop factor sensors).

The Samsung NX10 does a lot of things right in both form and function.  To see how it stacks up against the competition, read on. [Read more…]

June 19, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Nicole Young‘s new book just launched –  Canon 7D: From Snapshots to Great Shots.

This book has one goal: to teach Canon 7D owners how to make great shots using your camera. Starting with the top ten things you need to know about the 7D — charging your battery, setting your ISO, reviewing your photos, and more — professional photographer Nicole S. Young then carefully guides you through the modes of the camera, offering practical advice on choosing your settings, expert shooting tips, and end-of-chapter “challenges” to get you up and running with your 7D. This book is for anyone who has upgraded from a point-and-shoot, or who wants to jump right into photography with the control and capabilities of a powerful DSLR. – Peachpit

Canon 7D: From Snapshots to Great Shots is available for $24.99 retail; however, you can find it at Amazon for $16.49 at the time of this post.

Zack Arias Light Modifier Run Down

June 17, 2010 By Eric Reagan

If you happened to catch the Zack Arias session on creativeLIVE last weekend, you saw that one of the things he did was shoot a live comparison of a number of light modifiers, ranging from a 7′ Octabank down to 10-degree grid.

Zack has posted all of those images over on his blog at zarias.com for everyone to check out.  He’s even put them all together in a .zip file for you to download if you want to look at them on your own screen and compare different modifiers side-by-side.

If you want to learn off-camera lighting, Zack’s creativeLIVE session is a great way to jump in to it.  It’s three days packed full of lighting knowledge with Zack’s practical approach.  While it was free to watch the 3-day session live, you can download all three days for $129 and put them on your PC, iPhone, iPad, or whatever.  I didn’t have the ability to sit through all three days of the sessions non-stop, so I stole it for $79 before the session ended (Lord knows I could use some help with my off-camera lighting).  At $129, this is still an absurd bargain.

You can order Zack’s creativeLIVE session here.

And, again, the light modifier images are on Zack’s blog here.

And just so you know, I’m not pimping this class because I get anything out of it.  I get nothing, and neither Zack, nor anyone else from creativeLIVE asked me to say anything about it. I just want to make sure that anyone who reads Photography Bay and struggles with off-camera lighting is aware of this.
