March 6, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 5D Mark II Price Drop

Now that the 5D Mark III is out for a whopping $3500, it looks like we’re gonna be seeing some price breaks on the 5D Mark II, which appears to remain in the lineup.

B&H currently has the 5D Mark II for only $2199 for the body only and $2999 for the 5D Mark II with the 24-105mm f/4L IS lens.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Officially Unveiled

March 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 5D Mark III

The Canon 5D Mark III is finally official.  The camera offers a 22MP full frame CMOS image sensor at captures 1080p HD video as we expected.  A couple of key features set it apart from its predecessor.  First, the camera features the same, improved video capture formats in the edit-friendly ALL-I and the compression-friendly IPB formats. The 5D Mark III also steps up big in the still imagery specs – offering a max 6 fps capture rate and a new 61-point AF system.

However, Canon opted to keep virtually the 5D Mark III at the same resolution as its predecessor – a stark contrast to Nikon’s move to bump the D800 up to 36MP. In addition to the 5D Mark III, Canon has introduced a new flash, the Speedlite 600EX-RT, and new wireless radio trigger is the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT.

The “RT” those accessory names apparently stands for “radio transmitting” because that’s how these triggers work.  With a max distance of about 100-feet, you can control up to 5 groups, or 15 individual flashes, from the single ST-E3-RT transmitter.

Pre-order options for the 5D Mark III now up at B&H Photo.

ALL-I and IPB Video Compression on Canon’s 5D Mark III

March 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

5D Mark III

This is no real surprise at this point; however, a leaked review from a French publication confirms that the Canon 5D Mark III supports intraframe (ALL-i) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data compression.

Based on what we’ve seen thus far, it’s likely that the 5D Mark III video specs will closely resemble the specs found in the 1D X.  Note that the 1D X allows level monitoring on screen and adjustments to audio levels before and during recording of video clips.  The presence of a headphone output suggests that the 5D Mark III will take this a step further.

Jury is still out on the HDMI-out; however, there have been no leaks concerning this spec and pretty much everything is out in the open now.  Stay tuned over the next few hours for the official unveil.

March 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

5D Mark III and 24-70mm II

This appears to be the official images of the 5D Mark III along with a possible spec list for the camera. (via CR)

Note that there are a couple of things in the spec list that seem a little odd – like the plethora of video formats.  We should know something for sure later tonight though.

Canon 5D Mark III: What We Know and Think We Know

March 1, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 5D Mark III Press Invite

Above is a supposed to be one of the press invites for the 5D Mark III due out at midnight Thursday night. (via CR)

Something is coming Thursday night at midnight EST.  Of course, I’ll have full details up as soon as I know something official.  We may even get some leaks ahead of time (usually the case).

What we’re expecting is the Canon 5D Mark III – a 22MP full frame DSLR that captures 1080p video with the same codec we see in the 1D X (edit-friendly ALL-I and the more compressed IPB). [Read more…]

February 29, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 5D Mark II

Canon has posted a firmware update for the 5D Mark II. The only thing that the new firmware does is to optimize performance with UDMA Mode 7 CF cards that were released in February 2012 or later. You can find the firmware for download at Canon’s website.

I was sitting here squinting at some of the lower resolution photos of the Canon 5D Mark III looking to see what that top port was on the left side and someone emailed me a link to a high-res crop.   [Read more…]

Canon C300 Shoots “By the Light of the Moon” . . . Literally Lit by Moonlight

February 27, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Check out the above short from some Canon C300 action at ISO 10,000 and using the moon as the key light.

Yeah, there’s noise, but its not the nasty stuff we get out of the 5D Mark II at higher ISOs.  Now, if I only had $16k for the C300…
