DJI Responds to Phantom Flyaway Concerns and Safeguards in Phantom 2

January 14, 2014 By Eric Reagan

DJI Phantom

In July 2013, I posted an article detailing the numerous flyaway reports for the Phantom quadcopter that many users had experienced. It proved to be a very popular topic and users are still reporting issues and addressing possible solutions in this forum thread.

When I asked DJI about the issue via email last year, I received what seemed to be a basic troubleshooting response. Later in 2013, DJI released the Phantom 2 Vision and Phantom 2 quadcopter with additional features; however, the documentation for the Phantom 2 did not allude to any flyaway concerns relating to the original Phantom.

I attended DJI’s press conference at CES 2014, which highlighted the Phantom 2. After the press conference, DJI opened the floor for questions, at which time I presented the question from Photography Bay forum member and reader concerns regarding the original Phantom flyaways and whether the Phantom 2 takes into account any of these concerns with new safeguard to prevent flyaways. Final Cut Pro X Background Rendering in OS X Mavericks Not Working? Turn Off App Nap.

December 24, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Final_Cut_Pro_X_App_Nap-4

One of the grand new features in OS X Mavericks is App Nap, which saves on power to extend battery life on MacBooks. One of the unfortunate side effects is that is kills background rendering in Final Cut Pro X and other apps that take advantage of background rendering.

To make background rendering work again, simply turn off App Nap. The process is simple.

  1. Right-click on the application.
  2. Choose Get Info.
  3. Check the box “Prevent App Nap.”
  4. Enjoy background rendering again.

Proximity is a Cool Sci-fi Action Short Shot on the Canon C500

December 21, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Proximity

Ryan Connolly of Film Riot was planning on shooting a big-budget short film project, Outsiders; however, funding fell through at the last minute. Instead of hanging his head and complaining about it, he, along with his crew and actors, shot a low budget short with the equipment and personnel they had on hand.

Ryan worked with Seth Worley, who wrote and directed Plot Device, to craft the story for Proximity over a few days, which ended up as a 10-page script. They then shot the film on a Canon C500. Post-production was done with Adobe Creative Cloud, Pro Tools and Red Giant plug-ins.

Check out the 10-minute short below. [Read more…]
