Panasonic is on a roll lately in the 4K department. Back at CES 2014, we saw the Lumix GH4 Micro Four Thirds 4K camera and the 4K action camera. Shane Hurlbut is the cinematographer for the new Need for Speed movie. A couple weeks ago, he had a contest to see who could spot the GoPro footage in the trailer. The contest is over now, but Shane put together an annotated trailer that labels all the cameras and lenses used in the trailer for each and every shot (…and there are a lot of cuts in there).
Along with the C500 and Alexa Plus, there are a few shots using the Canon 1D C in obvious tight quarters or crash cam situations. Notably, all the cameras are capable of 4K image capture (and were shooting 4K) even though the film was finished in 2K. However, the 4K frame gives plenty of room for reframes and stabilization, which makes sense when you’re shooting car sequences at 120mph. [Read more…]

For all the waiting Blackmagic has forced with its Production Camera 4K model, the camera is finally starting to ship. And perhaps its worth the wait, as the camera now retails for $2995, instead of the previously announced $3995 price tag. While not all retailers have updated the price on their listings yet, Blackmagic Design confirms that those who pre-ordered the camera at $3995 will get it at the new $2995 price.
Expect the pre-orders to be filled in the coming days and new orders shipping thereafter.
Panasonic has finally taken wraps off its GH3 successor and 4K Micro Four Thirds camera, the Lumix GH4, which features a 16.05MP Live MOS sensor and a quad-core CPU. Most notably, the camera can capture true 4K (4096×2160) video at 24fps and UltraHD 4K video (3840×2160) at up to 30fps. [Read more…]

The more and more I see on the new Panasonic 4K Lumix camera, the more I am impressed. It is shaping up to be a groundbreaking 4K camera. The “game changer” moniker is really gone at this point for resolution and frame rate bumps; however, the G4K may be the most impressive launch we’ve seen in a prosumer camera in the past few years – especially if it comes in at the quoted “under $2000” price point.
Numerous rumors and leaks point to a Friday launch for the Panasonic 4K concept we saw at CES 2014. We believe the camera will be called the G4K and will offer a bevy of video-centric features.
