Apple Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.03 Now Available

Apple has issued an update to Digital Camera RAW to version 5.03, which adds RAW image support for the Canon EOS M2 in Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’11. The update also resolves an issue that prevented lens correction from working properly with Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 images and address a color cast issue on some Olympus OM-D E-M1 images.

The update is available through the Mac App Store’s “Updates” tab.

Perfect Photo Suite 8 Beta Still Free Through Nov. 26

onOne Software’s Perfect Photo Suite 8 is in its final beta version prior to the November 26 launch of the new version. The program is works as a plugin to Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. It can also be used as a standalone for editing images from start to finish. You can download the beta here at onOne Software’s website.

You can purchase Perfect Photo Suite 8 as a standalone app for $79.95. If you want the plug-in version only, it costs $129.95. The Premium Edition works as a plug-in and standalone application for $299.95. onOne Software is offering a pre-order price for $179.95. More details here at onOne Software’s website.

Apple Aperture 3.5 Released

Alongside several other updates today, Apple updated Aperture to version 3.5. the update adds several new features and bug fixes.

Notably, Aperture 3.5 now supports iCloud Photo Sharing and Apple Maps support. For SmugMug users, you can now publish and sync galleries directly from Aperture to your SmugMug account.

Apple Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.09 Adds Support for Olympus E-P5

Apple has issued an update to Digital Camera RAW to version 4.09, which adds RAW image compatibility for the Olympus E-P5 to Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’11.

It also includes changes that:

  • Restore lens correction to Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 images
  • Address a white balance issue with some Nikon images that were modified by third-party applications

What is a “Stop” of Light?

The concept of a “stop” of light is probably the most important concepts in photography, yet it’s widely misunderstood. In this article, we want to take you back to the basics to help visualize a stop of light and changes in exposure.

A stop of light is not a quantifiable unit of light entering the camera but rather a relative one. Therefore, increasing by one stop doubles the amount of light let into the camera while decreasing by one stop cuts the amount of light in half. [Read more…]
