Lowepro DroneGuard Kit Review

May 11, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Lowepro DroneGuard Kit

With the drone-splosion fully underway, we are starting to see some really great drones and some really great accessories. One of the accessory lines that has been sparse among mainstream companies has been carrying solutions for drones. There have been a few backpack and hard case solutions, but most have been very similar in design.

Enter Lowepro and its new DroneGuard Kit. [Read more…]

Game of Drones: DJI New Investments Could Value the Company at $10 Billion

May 7, 2015 By Eric Reagan

DJI Phantom 3

DJI has singlehandedly launched the drone market into the stratosphere. The DJI Phantom is instantly recognizable and synonymous with the word “drone.” It is nearly a household name. Just last week, we saw one at the center of a sequence on Big Bang Theory.

Right now, you can order a DJI drone to be shipped to your door in a day or two at prices ranging from $350 for a base-model Phantom 1 to over $6000 for a DJI S1000 that can haul heavy-duty camera. And there are models at nearly every price point in between. There is much and more for everyone in DJI’s lineup. [Read more…]

I love cars. I have been enamored with Ken Block’s Gymkhana series ever since it started a few years ago. What is Gymkhana, you ask? It is a few glorious minutes of magnificent hooning by a pro driver in a killer car and on a ridiculous course made of real-world locations. The latest edition takes place on the streets of Los Angeles.

What does that have to do with photography?

100 GoPro HERO cameras. Drones. RED EPIC cameras. The kind of stuff camera geeks are made of. [Read more…]

How to Document a DJI Phantom Malfunction and Crash for Warranty Claims

March 19, 2015 By Eric Reagan

DJI Phantom

It is no secret that some users experience DJI Phantom flyaways, which in many cases is no apparent fault of the operator. Many Photography Bay forum users have recounted similar circumstances where that resulted in a lost or crashed Phantom as a result of a flyaway. [Read more…]

FAA Tells Police How to Handle Illegal Drone Encounters

January 22, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Max Aero Drones-4

While the drone market continues to expand, the legality of operating them continues to be more up in the air than ever before. Earlier this month, the FAA released a new directive to local law enforcement agencies on how to handle encounters with drone operators.

While I am a lawyer, I am not your lawyer and this is an editorial commentary on newsworthy issues rather than legal advice.  Unless you’re paying a lawyer, you aren’t really getting legal advice, and what you are getting on websites, blogs and forums is worth just what you paid for it. If you are busted by the FAA for violating its regulations, get an aviation lawyer who knows their way around the administrative process. Do not solicit legal advice online. That free advice will be the most expensive you ever take.  [Read more…]

Massive Drone Roundup from CES 2015

January 8, 2015 By Eric Reagan

2015-Year-of-the-Drone

Every year at CES, something sticks out as just an over-the-top technology that seemingly everyone is pushing. A few years back, it was 3D TV. Last year, it was 4K TV and wearables. At CES 2015, there is a good case to be made that the drone is the thing.

Every corner I turned on the show floor, it seemed like I cam across a new drone from a new company. There are so many drone companies with new drones that CES even set aside an Unmanned Systems section on the massive show floor.

Unmanned Systems at CES 2015

I’ll look more closely at a few of the drones in upcoming posts here at Photography Bay. For now though, this roundup should give you an idea of just how crazy the drone market is about to be.

What follows is every drone I could find at CES. Unfortunately, there are so many tucked away in various corners of the show that I have surely missed some. [Read more…]
