Valve Source Filmmaker

Valve, the video game company, has launched a project dubbed Source Filmmaker, which gives users the power to edit scenes using video game action.  And get this . . . it’s free.

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

I can see this being an effective storytelling tool for people wanting to sharpen their editing skills but lack source footage to work with, or maybe even as a pre-viz tool.  Beyond that, I bet we’ll see some folks come up with rather entertaining stories built on the shoulders of video games.

Tiffen Dfx 3 Video and Photo Plug-in Review

Tiffen Dfx 3 Premiere Pro Film Stocks Panel Comparison

Tiffen Dfx 3 Premiere Pro Film Stocks Panel Comparison

Tiffen Dfx v3 is a suite of filters and effects that is available for popular video and photo applications as a plug-in or a standalone application.  Over the past few months, I have been using the software suite primarily in Premiere Pro CS5.5.  However, I have also touched on the standalone app and as well as the After Effects and Lightroom plug-in integration.

As with any software or plug-in, understanding the capabilities of it is paramount to fully utilizing the application to meet the needs of your workflow.  I don’t pretend to have an exhaustive understanding of all that’s within Tiffen Dfx 3 at this point; however, I have used it enough to realize where it meets many of my needs and makes life easier in post-production. Editing Video in Photoshop CS6

March 12, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD3sh6iT72Y&w=640&h=360]

Take a look at the above video, which was completely edited in Photoshop (CS6 maybe?).

Right now, you can edit videos in Photoshop CS5 Extended.  I’ve done it in the past even with plug-ins applied to video footage.  However, if I can get the look I’m after in Premiere Pro or After Effects, I’m going to do that because the process is more streamlined (for now).

However, I’m excited to see what Adobe has up its sleeve because of the following statement at the Photoshop blog from Photoshop Senior Product Manager, Bryan O’Neil Hughes: [Read more…]
