Canon is Suing “Get It Digital” and Others to Stop Gray Market DSLR Sales

November 22, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon-Gray-Market-Lawsuit

Canon USA filed a pair of lawsuits in October against Get It Digital, LLC and several other widely-known gray market retailers in a effort to force them to stop selling gray market Canon cameras and other products in the United States.

I obtained copies of the complaints and exhibits late last week and have reviewed the allegations made and evidence cited within. [Read more…]

GoPro’s HERO4 Session Targeted by Polaroid for Patent Infringement

November 4, 2015 By Eric Reagan

GoPro-HERO4-Session-and-Polaroid-Cube

C&A Marketing, which licenses Polaroid’s brand name, is suing GoPro for patent infringement of its Polaroid Cube line of action cameras. C&A claims that the GoPro HERO4 Session is a ripoff of the Cube, which was introduced to the market several months before the HERO4 Session.

If you were familiar with the Polaroid Cube prior to the HERO4 Session launch, you couldn’t help but notice the striking similarity of the two.

I said as much in my coverage of the HERO4 Session announcement coverage: [Read more…]

Nikon D600 Owners Get New D610 Out of Lawsuit

August 7, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Nikon-D610-spot-free

Remember the class action lawsuit that was stirring a few months back from D600 owners?

Well, it looks like a settlement has been reached and D600 owners who were part of the lawsuit now have the chance to trade in their D600 models for a new D610.

Below is an email received by a D600 owner that had been part of the lawsuit. He posted the email on the fredmiranda forums. I have added emphasis to certain key parts of the email. [Read more…]

Sigma Ordered to Pay Nikon 1.5 Billion Yen for VR Patent Infringement

March 17, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Sigma 24-105mm f4-2

We are finally seeing results from a lawsuit that Nikon filed against Sigma in May 2011. A judgment was issued against Sigma last month in Tokyo District court, which awarded 1.5 billion Yen to Nikon (close to $15M USD).

The dispute centers a number of Sigma lenses using vibration reduction technology. Nikon originally sought the equivalent of close to $150M USD; however, the judgment stated that the damages was equivalent to 15% of the profits of the violating products earned by Sigma, cutting damages down from the max profits of 10.1 billion Yen.

This has to be quite the blow to Sigma. The company has been a roll lately with awesome lenses like the 24-105mm f/4 OS and 18-35mm f/1.8 lenses. Hopefully, Sigma’s operations won’t be negatively affected in a manner that would delay future lens releases and Sigma’s momentum will continue to gain traction as a solid third-party lens maker.

Don’t Put Unlicensed Music in Your Videos (Or, Where to Find Affordable & Good Music for Video)

December 22, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Waveform

I started to title this post “Don’t Put Copyrighted Music in Your Videos” but that doesn’t really fit.  If someone else created/performed it, then chances are that there’s a valid copyright to it and you need to either: (1) pony up for a license fee, or (2) think twice about using it in your videos. Texas Sues Broadway Photo for Bait & Switch Scams

November 30, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Don’t Mess With Texas

The State of Texas has just lit up Broadway Photo and Starlight Camera & Video (aka everyprice.com) for their unlawful bait and switch tactics.  Broadway Photo, among others, has long been the bane of consumers who have been unfortunate enough to order a “too good to be true” deal from them only to get suckered into buying an overpriced battery, memory card or some other scam during a “confirmation call”.

If you’ve never had the misfortune of dealing with Broadway Photo, check out Reseller Ratings’ user reviews of them.  And here’s the Reseller Ratings for Starlight Camera & Video.

Granted this is just the beginning of the lawsuit; however, it would be nice to see some of these scam shops shut down.

Check out the actual pleadings and the Texas Attorney General’s press release below. [Read more…]
