Sony NEX-3 and 2 Lenses for $499 – Deal Alert

November 15, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-3

Even though the Sony NEX-3 is last year’s model, it’s still a competent camera – and Amazon has a solid deal now through December 3.  The Sony NEX-3 kit with an 18-55mm lens and the 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens is only $499.

The 16mm lens alone is normally $250, so this is quite a bargain.

Here’s the link to Amazon.

Sony NEX-5N Review

October 18, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-5N

The Sony NEX-5N is part of Sony’s second go-round at the mirrorless camera format. The NEX-3 and NEX-5 were largely regarded as a success – and for the most part the NEX-C3 and NEX-5N models which followed on a year later have been held with similar regard.

What you need to know up front is that the Sony NEX-5N is not a perfect camera.  It’s a solid (bordering on excellent) offering from Sony; however, it has some niggling problems and concerns that take some of the luster off of it.  (Update 11/9/11:  The core defect appears to have been fixed. See details below.) [Read more…]

Sony NEX-5n First Impressions Review

September 18, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-5n

I’ve had the Sony NEX-5n in hand for all of a day now; however, I already have some quick first impressions to share.

First up, its a very fun camera to use.  Quick response from shutter and focus.  Autofocus is also very good in video mode.  The face tracking AF during video recording seems to be very smart and smooth all the way around.

It’s also very compact – with the biggest part being the lens, which is rather bulky on the otherwise tiny camera.  That’s the nature of the beast though, particularly considering that it is an 18-55mm zoom lens that’s including in a very affordable kit package. [Read more…]

Sony NEX-VG20 APS HD Camcorder Announced

August 24, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-VG20

The Sony NEX-VG20 is a follow-up to last year’s groundbreaking NEX-VG10.  The new NEX-VG20 includes “comprehensive manual controls, improved imaging quality and upgraded sound” according to Sony’s press release – all of which are welcomed for this prosumer camcorder.

The NEX-VG20 captures 1920 x 1080 AVCHD video at 60p or 24p frame rates.  The 24p mode offers the ability to use Cinema Tone Gamma and Cinema Tone Color presets for richer color out of the camera.  The NEX-VG20 also continues the use of the Quad Capsule Spatial Array Microphone; however, it now supports stereo and 5.1 channel surround.

Sony has also improved the access to the camera’s controls, allowing access to the manual control dial even when the flip-out LCD is closed.

In addition to its video capture features, the NEX-VG20 also captures high-resolution still images with its 16.1MP CMOS image sensor.  It even offers the option to capture RAW image files – something that its predecessor did not do.

The Sony NEX-VG20 should be available in November for $1599 (body only) and $2199 when equipped with the 18-200mm kit lens.  Check availability on B&H Photo.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Sony LA-EA2 NEX Camera to Alpha Lens Adapter, Includes Translucent Mirror

August 11, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony LA-EA2 Adapter

A leaked diagram of the second-generation NEX-to-Alpha lens adapter, dubbed the LA-EA2 (rolls off the tongue, don’t it?), will apparently include a translucent mirror that also appears to incorporate a phase detection AF sensor for fast and precise AF acquisition on the upcoming NEX-7 and NEX-5N.

The current LA-EA1 NEX-to-Alpha lens adapter is rather sluggish for AF acquisition on compatible models; however, it lacks any mechanical AF optimization.
