April 25, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Nikon Rebates

Nikon’s Instant Rebates for select DSLR and lens combos is set to expire on May 1 (that’s next Saturday) May 29 (updated).  You can get some significant savings (up to $400) on these combos by taking advantage of the Instant Rebates.  One of the best things about the new Instant Rebate approach that Nikon and other camera manufacturers are taking is that there are no forms to mail in and wait 6-8 weeks for your check to show up in the mail.

Here’s the list of deals: [Read more…]

Nikon P100 Video Sample at 240 fps

April 2, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The above video was shot with a Nikon P100 at its highest video frame rate of 240 fps, which provides the cool slow motion effect.  The apparent spontaneous exploding orange and water jug were courtesy of the impact from a 55 grain hollow point .223 caliber bullet traveling at approximately 3000 feet per second.  Even the 240 fps frame rate is not fast enough to capture something traveling that fast. Shooting Hoops with the Nikon D3S

March 13, 2010 By Eric Reagan

While evaluating the autofocus performance of the Nikon D3S, I shot with it at a couple of recent Tennessee basketball games.  I’m working on a more in-depth evaluation of the AF performance. In the mean time, however, here are a few of the resulting images.  All of the following images were captured as NEF files and processed in Lightroom 2. [Read more…]

Tamron Announces 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens

March 9, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD

Tamron has announced the development of a new 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD for Nikon, Canon and Sony mounts. The new lens is the first from Tamron to incorporate Ultrasonic Silent Drive AF motor for faster autofocus.  Additionally, the lens will include Tamron’s Vibration Compensation (except for Sony mount) to reduce shake-induced blur in images.

Tamron will release the Nikon mount version first, and then follow on with Canon and Sony versions.  Tamron has not announced a price for the lens at this time; however, it matches up squarely against the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VR and the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, both of which are in the $500 range.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

February 10, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Canon 1D Mark IV vs. Nikon D3s

In the first comparison of the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3s, we looked at JPEG image samples that came straight from each of these cameras; however, I promised to deliver images processed from the RAW files of each camera as well.

As we are well aware by now, the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3s deliver impressive results at what were previously ridiculous sensitivity settings.  To see the results of the various RAW conversion methods on images produced by these class-leading cameras, keep reading.
