Adobe CC and CS6 Compatibility with OS X Mavericks

October 23, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Apple OS X Mavericks

Apple released OS X Mavericks yesterday. I’m not going to cover all of the new features. It’s free though and there are several things I do like (e.g., tabbed Finder, and Menu Bar/Dock available on all screens); however, one of the first things photographers want to know before upgrading to a new OS is whether there are compatibility issues with photo editing software.

I’ve used Lightroom 5 in OS X Mavericks and have no problems at all with it thus far. Additionally, Adobe released a statement regarding its CC and CS6 apps. In short, everything should work fine (except After Effects requires an update). The full statement is below. [Read more…]

A Trippy Look at Content-Aware Fill in Video

October 10, 2013 By Eric Reagan

We’ve seen a lot of different uses for Content-Aware Fill since it was initially introduced as a feature of Photoshop. There have been plenty of failures and successes for the feature. All that I have seen have been in still images.

The above video, however, puts Content-Aware Fill to the test on moving images for an interesting (if, less than perfect) take on the feature.

After watching the video for a few seconds though, I started thinking about the information that is available frame to frame and how Content-Aware Fill could leverage this additional info for application in video. It is already possible to automate this process in Photoshop for a static scene with Image Stacks – like so.

So where is our Content-Aware Fill for video Adobe? Use those other frames to make this work.

Google+ Goes RAW; Better Conversion Now Supports Over 70 Cameras . . . Look Out Adobe!

September 26, 2013 By Eric Reagan

beforeafterjpeg

Google+ added improved RAW file to JPEG conversion for over 70 cameras (including new cameras like the Nikon D800 and Nikon 1 J3). Additionally, you can always access your RAW files from the cloud if you need the original on a local drive.

I think this is a big, dang deal. While everyone is stirring for an Adobe competitor to come out of the woodwork with a perpetual license alternative to Photoshop, Google is quietly sneaking up with its acquisition of Nik and just continues to nudge out releases of photo editing, archive and sharing support via Google+. Adobe Creative Cloud Pushes Past 1 Million Subscribers; Photoshop CC and Lightroom Now Available for $9.99/mo

September 19, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Creative Cloud Deal

After the Creative Cloud subscription method was implemented in full and perpetual licenses for future versions were killed,  many photographers vowed to leave Adobe in the dust and proclaimed that the company would crumble and fall from the decision. Adobe’s prior goal was to reach 1 million subscribers before the end of 2013. It seems that they are ahead of schedule. [Read more…]

Corel Releases 64-bit PaintShop Pro X6

September 16, 2013 By Eric Reagan

PaintShop Pro X6 Ultimate

Corel recently updated PaintShop Pro with a 64-bit version. PaintShop Pro X6 now supports 64-bit processing and is proudly available from Corel as a perpetual license application, as communicated in Corel’s press release and in correspondence from Corel’s PR department (take that as a direct shot at Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription-only licensing).

If’ you’ve been looking for Photoshop alternatives, this might be worth a closer inspection for the price and performance. It even opens your .PSD files if you drop your Photoshop subscription… [Read more…]

Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 for $9.99/mo . . . But There’s a Catch

September 4, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Adobe_deal_equation_650px_proof6

One of the biggest criticisms since Adobe killed perpetual licenses and forced Creative Cloud memberships on users who want access to future versions of Photoshop has been the price. The full Creative Cloud subscription that includes all the apps runs $50/mo. Single apps, like Photoshop CC, run $20/mo.

Jimmy Beltz and I discussed this very issue during a live cast shortly after the launch of Creative Cloud. I believe it was Jimmy that came up with the suggestion of offering Photoshop CC and Lightroom for a combined price of $10/mo.

Well, that is just what Adobe has done. [Read more…]
