WD TV Live Hub and WD Photos App Review

May 24, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The WD TV Live Hub is a set top box for your TV that gives you access to streaming content like Netflix and Pandora.  Other services like Flickr and Facebook are also accessible through the WD TV Live Hub.

However, where it beats out other streaming devices is with the inclusion of a 1TB hard drive and the ability to share media across devices on your network and remotely with your iOS or Android devices using the WD Photos App. [Read more…]

Coleman LED Quad Lantern as Cheap Video Lighting Kit

May 18, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Check out this $56 Coleman LED lantern kit, which breaks down into 4 separate LED lights with rechargeable batteries.

Of course, Coleman designed this as a camping accessory; however, it looks like it could work well as a compact remote light setup for video.  Obviously, it’s not for everyone, but if you are looking for a DIY light kit for your budget videos, this might fit the bill.

Check out the video below where the guys from Cameratown give it a go. [Read more…]

Proof That Multiples of ISO 160 Work Best on Canon HDSLRs

May 1, 2011 By Eric Reagan

If you’ve tinkered around with Canon HDSLRs, then you may have heard that its best to shoot video using sensitivity settings that are multiples of ISO 160.  I’ve been doing this because I have heard folks like Shane Hurlbut and Vincent Laforet say for a couple of years now that that’s the way to do it.

Andrew Schär gave us some proof for our eyes in this test with the Canon 60D that he uploaded to Vimeo yesterday. [Read more…]

Is the Apple Store Blackballing Competitive Adobe Software?

April 30, 2011 By Eric Reagan

I was in the Apple Store a few days ago and wanted to try out After Effects on the new Core i7 MacBook Pro; however, it was nowhere to be found.  I was almost certain that I’ve used After Effects on Macs in the Apple store before – but it wasn’t on a single computer there.

It turns out though, that there are a number of professional Adobe software applications that are entirely absent from the Apple Store – either as demos on the display Macs or as boxed software available for purchase. [Read more…]

Canon Plug-in-E1 for Final Cut Pro Ver. 1.2 Now Available

April 25, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Canon 1D Mark IV

Version 1.2 of the Canon E1 plug-in for Final Cut Pro is available for download now.  The new version allows you to import files without the need to maintain the CF card folder structure.  It’s designed to work with the Canon 5D Mark II, 7D, 1D Mark IV and 60D.  I’ve heard unconfirmed reports that the new version will work with the Canon Rebel series DSLRs but nothing for certain yet.  For more details, see the original post here.

You can download it on product pages for Canon DSLRs.  Here’s a direct link to the 5D Mark II Drivers & Software page.  Just select Mac OS X as your OS and then choose the download link for the plug-in.
