Final Cut Studio X . . . Stay Tuned

April 13, 2011 By Eric Reagan

One of the big missing pieces to the Final Cut Pro X announcement last night was any mention of the rest of the Final Cut Studio suite of products.  As evident from the comments in the live blog post, pros are very interested/concerned about where the FCP X sneak peek leaves Motion, Color, etc. [Read more…]

Final Cut Pro X Annoncement Video [Updated: Better Video]

April 13, 2011 By Eric Reagan

(I use the word “video” very loosely.) However, I’ve embedded 4 videos below that contain almost all of the FCP X announcement. The videos were shot from the pocket of my camera bag and I was not monitoring the framing (because I was live-blogging the event and taking photos at the same time) – so I’m really sorry about that guys.

Dear Joby, feel free to kick me next time you see me for not bringing a Gorillapod with me.  Anyway, you can see a somewhat reasonable amount of the projector and hear the commentary pretty clearly, which will give you a little better insight into the new software (perhaps better than my cursory commentary in the live blog post).

If you missed the live coverage, there are plenty of screen shots there, along with a summary of most of the key new features.  Between the live blog coverage and these videos, you should have a decent idea of what FCP X looks like and how it functions. [Read more…]

This will be a live blog feed – with the newest updates at the bottom.  (Hit the ‘Refresh’ button for updates.)

There is a crowd growing outside of the conference room of the Final Cut Pro User Group Supermeet right now.  We’re all waiting to take our seats to see what everyone at NAB 2011 has been talking about for the past couple of days . . . the unveiling of the next generation of Final Cut Pro.  (Let’s just say that better be what happens or their will be complete anarchy here.) No New Canon DSLRs This Week

April 11, 2011 By Eric Reagan

For those of you holding out hope, Canon’s own Chuck Westfall confirmed to me today that there will be no new Canon DSLR announcements this week.  The ‘major product announcements’ set for NAB were the recently announced video lenses and 3D firmware upgrade for the XF300 and XF305 camcorders.

For DSLR users, Canon’s biggest news has been the Technicolor ‘CineStyle’ and the update to the EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro.

I’ll have more details about the CineStyle profile later – hopefully, tonight.  Stay tuned.

Sony Officially Unveils F65 CineAlta Camera

April 10, 2011 By Eric Reagan

At NAB 2011 today, Sony took the wraps off of its new F65 CineAlta camera, which offers 16-bit 4K RAW capture at up to 72 fps.  It will also shoot 2K resolution at 120 fps.  The F65 is a serious pro-level filmmaking tool.  It has an 8K sensor (approx. 20MP) in which a full half of the photosites in 4K output are green photosites – with the other half evenly split between red and blue.  Sony says, “This is twice the amount of green resolution compared with traditional 4K Bayer pattern sensors, providing a significant improvement in image resolution that is ideal for VFX processing.”

The Sony F65 is the big brother to the recently-announced Sony PMW-F3, along with its junior sibling, the Sony NEX-FS100.

Check out the video overview of the new camera and the press release below. [Read more…]

SF to Paris Timelapse

April 9, 2011 By Eric Reagan

They say adding motion to a timelapse is the way to make it really shine. The folks at Beepshow used an Air France jet as a 5000 mile dolly to capture this cool timelapse on an 11 hour flight from San Francisco to Paris.

The timelapse was captured with a Canon 5D Mark II and 16-35mm f/2.8 lens.  Audio was mixed on an iPad and the whole thing was edited in iMovie and After Effects CS5.

Yet another reason to always get the window seat.
