Hands-On with the Light L16 Computational Camera
I had the opportunity to handle and shoot a bit with the new Light L16 camera at an event in New York last week while I was in town for PhotoPlus. The event seemed to be put on for Light L16 pre-order customers and some industry and press members. While there, I was able to walk around with a Light L16 to try it out.
My first impression was that it was a little bigger than I expected. It’s probably not fair but I imagined something close to a large cell phone; however, the L16 is definitely bulkier in length and girth. That said, I still was able to carry it in my back pocket – although that’s probably not something I would recommend if you are shelling out $2,000 for one of these on pre-order.
I’ve watched Light from afar over the past couple of years. I haven’t followed along with every bit of the news and announcements that have happened since it was originally shown as a pre-order campaign. At the time, I thought the camera was going to be the next big thing and would shake the camera industry once again. After using it for an hour or so, I’m less sure of that. [Read more…]
Tamron 100-400mm Di VC USD Lens Priced at $799
The new Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens now has an official $799 price tag, which is rather respectable given the zoom range. The lens is both lighter and smaller than I expected when I picked it up for the first time. I only spent a few minutes with it but I paid particular attention to the Vibration Compensation, which did a great job at the long end of 400mm even though it suffers from a slow f/6.3 minimum aperture. It provides enough stabilization to get you down to 1/60s at 400mm.
The long lens means there is definitely some air sucking happening as your rotate the zoom ring to extend or retract the zoom. You can actually feel air being pushed out of the lens behind the rear element when retracting it if detached from a camera. Tamron combats the threat of dust sucking with robust seals at the lens mount. Additionally, Tamron offers a generous 6 year warranty on its lenses, which covers dust inside the lens elements.
The new Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens will ship on November 16 for $799. You can pre-order it here at B&H Photo.

Sony vs. Nikon at PhotoPlus 2017
I’ve been attending photography-related tradeshows for nearly a decade now. Over the years, I’ve noticed that Canon generally has the flagship location, Nikon is situated in the second-best location and Sony is somewhere in a second tier location. Last week, however, that order of operation changed and PhotoPlus gave us a metaphorical glimpse into the state of the camera industry as a whole. [Read more…]

Sony A7R III vs. A7R II Side-by-Side Comparison

Sony A7R II (left) & Sony A7R III (right)
I stopped by the Sony booth today to take a closer look at the new Sony A7R III and was able to look at it side-by-side with the A7R II. I expected the A7R III to be nearly identical to the A7R II; however, the new battery in the A7R III forced some noticeable ergonomic changes. [Read more…]
Lexar is NOT Dead
Lexar has long-been “the other” memory card brand in the photography market. To photographers, Lexar and SanDisk have been akin to Nikon and Canon, as one of the two primary choices of reliable brands for memory cards.
As I walked through PhotoPlus 2017 today, I was surprised to see a Lexar booth. Recall earlier this year when parent company Micron said it was killing the consumer-oriented Lexar brand to focus on enterprise solutions for flash memory. [Read more…]
