Canon PIXMA MG8120 and MG6120 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printers

August 17, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Canon has announced new all-in-one photo printers in its PIXMA series, the MG8120 and MG6120.

The new printers feature Canon’s Full HD Movie Print, which allows users to print individual frames from movies captured on compatible EOS and PowerShot cameras. The PIXMA MG8120 also features a built-in Film Adapter Unit, which aids in scanning old 35mm slides and negatives.

Both printers feature six ink takes that provide a max color resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi, and can churn out a 4×6 print in 20 seconds.  The printers are also compatible with iPhone and Android smartphones through Canon’s Easy-Photo Print application, which is available in the iTunes App Store and the Android Market for free.

The Canon PIXMA MG8120 carries an initial retail price of $299.99, while the MG6120 is priced at $199.98.

Canon EOS 7DSV (Studio Version) Announced

August 17, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Canon has announced the EOS 7DSV DSLR, which is being dubbed as the Studio Version of the popular EOS 7D.  The new 7DSV features four levels of locking camera controls geared toward school and event photographers.  These locking controls allows an administrator to set up the camera and prevent an operator from changing critical settings, such as in school and event portraits.

Additionally, the Canon 7DSV features the Canon Barcode Solution, which allows customer, organizational, patient or other data to be embedded into the EXIF data of each image.  Ultimately, this barcode functionality should be a boon to large organization or event photographers looking for help on the backend of file organization and management.

The Canon 7DSV Studio Version kit includes a firmware modified version of the Canon WFT-E5A, which can be used in conjuntion with a barcode reader to manage image and customer data via a wired connection.  However, it is possible to work wirelessly using the Canon BU-30 Bluetooth adapter.  Existing WFT-E5A units can be modified by Canon to work with the 7DSV in this functionality.

The 7DSV kit with the WFT-E5A carries an initial retail price of $2599, while the 7DSV body alone is priced at $1829.

Fuji FinePix REAL 3D W3 Announced

August 17, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Fuji FinePix REAL 3D W3 is the new 3D camera in Fuji’s lineup, and the W3 promises to deliver not only 3D photos, but also 3D video in 720p HD, which is something more than can be said for Panasonic’s recently-announced HDC-SDT750 3D camcorder.  The Fuji W3 3D footage can be played back through its mini HDMI port to 3D-capable TVs.

The Fuji W3 features dual 10MP sensors and a 3x optical zoom (35-105mm equiv) for each lens.  The W3 also features a 1150K dot resolution 3.5″ Autostereoscopic 3D widescreen LCD, which means you can view your 3D photos and videos on the camera’s display without the need for 3D glasses.

The Fuji W3 should be available in September 2010 at an initial retail price of $499.95.

Canon Working on Built-in Radio Triggers for Wireless Flash

August 16, 2010 By Eric Reagan

You had to know this one was coming, right?  For years now, DSLR manufacturers have been tied to wireless flash communication via  light-based transmission systems, which puts limits on the ability to take your flashes out of the line-of-sight of other flashes.  Of course, there are a plenty of workarounds – and there are third party solutions from the likes of PocketWizards and RadioPoppers.

But there has always been something missing with those other solutions.  Maybe it’s a little clunky to strap on those third-party devices?  Maybe there was some radio interference?  Something, however minor, just doesn’t quite function like the factory specs of the wireless flash system under ideal conditions.

A recently filed patent application with the USPTO reveals that Canon is working on a radio-based solution for its wireless flash system with transmitters built-in camera bodies. [Read more…]

New Canon Gear on August 17

August 15, 2010 By Eric Reagan

A tipster tells me that Canon will be launching “1 dslr, some lenses and lots of point and shoot” cameras on August 17, which word supposedly comes from a source within Canon.

I don’t think any of this is really groundbreaking as rumors and leaks of the 60D have been flying like crazy lately, and Canon Rumors has pegged the G12, S95, SX30, SX130 and other point and shoots for launch soon.

The date, however, is different than what has previously been mentioned (Aug. 24 or 26).  I guess we’ll know Tuesday.

If you have more info on the announcement details, feel free to pass it along via the contact form (you can put in fake email address if you don’t want to reveal your email).

Reader Photos – Sunday, August 15, 2010

August 15, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Draper Mountains

It’s time for our weekly break from the gear for a few minutes so we can enjoy another round of reader photos from the Photography Bay Flickr Group.

One of the things that I really enjoy about these sifting through these photos every week is seeing all the different kinds of cameras that people use – from point and shoots, to iPhones, to DSLRs and medium format cameras. This all just goes to show that it’s really not about the camera. That lightning photo at the top from sumoetx? Shot with a compact Canon PowerShot A720 IS.

As much as we all love cameras, lenses and other gadgets, it’s not about the gear.

Check out the rest of the photos below. [Read more…]

Sony A900 USB Flash Drive

August 13, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Not to be outdone by the Canon 5D Mark II USB flash drive, there’s now a replica of a Sony A900 as a USB flash drive.  MICgadget.com says they will set you back about $29 USD in China for 4GB of storage, but I haven’t found any retailers that’ll ship these to the US yet.

Let us know in the comments if you find these for sale.

(UPDATE: Tracked down, and available here for $19. Thanks Phil.)
