The second-gen Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras is now in stock and shipping. The first-gen lens was an excellent lens and highly sought after among Micro Four Thirds users. I expect this version to achieve similar status. Check it out in black or silver here at B&H Photo.

Photographer Who Photographed Neighbors Through Windows Sees Invasion of Privacy Lawsuit Dismissed

Photograph from Arne Svenson’s “The Neighbors”
Photographer Arne Svenson photographed people in a residential building across from his second-floor apartment in New York City. The images ended up in the Julie Saul Gallery in a show, “The Neighbors,” with prints for sale at up to $7500.
The images in the show drew a huge response by the residents appearing the in photos and, ultimately, led to a lawsuit against Svenson for invasion of privacy.
Last week, that case was dismissed in New York State court by Judge Eileen A. Rakower, who ruled that the images were protected by the First Amendment and that they did not violate New York State civil rights laws barring the use of photos for commercial purposes without a person’s consent. The court order specifically noted that “[a]n artist may create and sell a work of art that resembles an individual without his or her written consent.” [Read more…]

Canon Making a Move Into Medium Format?

Now this would stir the pot a bit….
New rumors suggest that Canon is looking into digital medium format cameras. Specifically, that Canon is investing (possibly with the intent to purchase) a medium format manufacturer. The most obvious choice? Phase One.
Phase One makes some very high-res camera backs, including the IQ280 at 80MP in 645 format with a sensor size of 40.4mm x 53.7mm.
Just how big is that compared to a full frame sensor found in the likes of the 5D Mark III and 1D X? [Read more…]
Nikon is Disappointed With Its Mirrorless Camera Sales, While the Rest of Us are Disappointed with Nikon Mirrorless Cameras

In Nikon’s latest financial results, the company revealed that its Nikon 1 series mirrorless camera sales have been less than expected in the US and Europe.
Nikon Imaging president Yasuyuki Okamoto beats around the bush about why the Nikon 1 series isn’t catching on, stating “In Europe and the U.S. the ratio of mirrorless to SLRs hasn’t grown at all, unlike in Asia, where it’s quite popular with women because it’s light. We had higher expectations for other regions. But people who like cameras tend to just go for SLRs, even though they’re very heavy.” (emphasis added).
Or maybe, just maybe . . . people who like and know cameras want a mirrorless camera that offers competing image quality with a SLR. The Nikon 1 series of cameras does not. This is apparently obvious to everyone but Nikon Imaging’s president. [Read more…]
