Audio Recorder Shootout Videos

October 15, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKVeBqhXMvM&w=640&h=360]

Here are a couple of great videos on some common audio recorder comparisons, as well as a look into mic polar patterns and best practices for recording audio with your HDSLR video.  In the first video we get a look at the noise levels on the Zoom H4n, Tascam DT-100 MKII, Sound Devices 702, Beachtek DXA-SLR PRO, Edirol R44, Tascam DR-680 and the juicedLink Riggy Micro and Riggy Assist.

This is a great video to bookmark for reference given all of the mic comparisons within. Being a big fan of the Tascam DR-100 MKII, I was rather surprised at how well the juicedLink Riggy preamps performed when recorded direct to camera.  They are obviously doing some good work over at juicedLink.

Next, take a look at this video with Olivia Speranza and Robert from juicedLink as he goes over some mic performance and behaviors, as well as other best practices when recording audio for video.

Next Sony Full Frame DSLR to Feature 50MP Sensor?

October 13, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony A99

Wow. Things are starting to get out of hand now, aren’t they?

Four years ago, I thought the 21MP on the 5D Mark II was more than enough . . . if not a bit too much.  I’ve become accustomed to that over the last few years and it seemed like we hit a sweet spot in the resolution department among DSLRs. Then, Nikon came along with the 36MP behemoth Nikon D800, which stepped up the game (using a Sony sensor, of course).

Now, word comes from SonyAlphaRumors that the next high-end Sony camera may feature a 50MP sensor and reside above the Alpha A99 in Sony’s DSLR lineup.  According to tips, Sony is working on two potential options with one to be released as early as Spring 2013.

What do you think about a DSLR with a 50MP full frame sensor?  Is that too much?  Or is that the kind of resolution you are after?

iStock Pricing Now Uses Real Dollars for Stock Photo Purchases

October 13, 2012 By Eric Reagan

iStockphoto has long used a “credit” payment system that lets you buy images and other stock files with credits instead of dollars.

Until recently, the only option available for purchasing stock files at iStockphoto has been to purchase credits and then purchase the files with those purchased credits. Additionally, the actual dollar value of a credit may be different depending on how many credits you purchase in bulk.  For those who buy lots of images on a frequent basis, the bulk purchase of credits makes sense.  However, those who only occasionally purchase stock images or other files encounter problems with understanding the credit-to-dollar value of files, as well as the possibility of your credits expiring (it’s happened to me).

The new Shopping Cart Checkout at iStock now allows you to purchase stock images without having to first purchase iStock credits.  When you add a file to your shopping cart, you will see the price in dollars and not credits.

Red Giant’s ‘Form 17’ is Multicam Mayhem to Show Off PluralEyes 3

October 12, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/48853502 w=640&h=360]

Red Giant’s latest short, Form 17, takes on a 14-page script packed with dialog and shot in one day with multiple cameras and a Tascam DR-100.  This combination made for a massive amount of footage and audio to sync up in post, which Red Giant made short work of thanks to its new PluralEyes 3 audio-syncing software.

If you want a closer look at the BTS after watching the short film above, check out the making of video here on Red Giant’s site.
