Sony NEX-VG30

Sony NEX-VG30

Sony has announced the NEX-VG900 and NEX-VG30 interchangeable lens camcorders.  The NEX-VG900 is the first full frame camcorder to hit the market.

The NEX-VG30 is an APS-C format camcorder that comes available with an 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 power zoom lens.

Both the VG900 and VG30 capture 1080p at 24p and 60p frame rates using the AVCHD 2.0 codec.  The VG900 is compatible with both E-mount and Alpha mount lenses courtesy of the included LA-EA3 adapter.  When using E-mount lenses, the VG900 operates as an APS-C crop camcorder without any loss of resolution.

The NEX-VG900 has a new Multi Interface Shoe that works with a new XLR adapter kit, which allows you to connect higher-end shotgun mics.

The Sony NEX-VG900 will be available in November for $3300.  Check availability here at B&H Photo.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Camera Announced – and It Is Gorgeous!

September 12, 2012 By Eric Reagan

 Sony RX1

The Sony Cyber-shot RX1 is a new full frame compact camera, which sounds like a bit of an oxymoron.  Somehow, Sony managed to stuff a full frame image sensor inside a compact body and bolt a 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens on the front with a 9-blade aperture for circular bokeh.

And, you know what?

It looks amazing. [Read more…]

Sony NEX-6

As expected, the Sony NEX-6 is a 16.1MP mirrorless camera situated in Sony’s NEX lineup between the NEX-5R and the NEX-7.

The NEX-6 features an advanced, hybrid AF system comprised of phase-detect (read: DSLR AF system) and contrast-detect AF methods, which is the same system found on the new NEX-5R that was introduced last month.  The NEX-6 also offers 10fps still image capture with AF tracking and a sensitivity up to ISO 25600.

The NEX-6 features the same XGA OLED viewfinder found on the NEX-7, as well as a DSLR-style mode dial.  The camera captures 1080/60p HD video and offers integrated WiFi sharing and camera apps via Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app on iOS and Android devices.

Along with the Sony NEX-6, a new 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 powered zoom lens, a 35mm f/1.8 lens and a 10-18mm OSS zoom lens were announced for the Sony NEX line of cameras.

The Sony NEX-6 will be available in November with the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 powered zoom lens for $1000.  It will also be available as a body-only option for $850.  You can order the NEX-6 here at B&H Photo.

Nikon D600 Specs and Image Leak

September 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D600

More details on the upcoming Nikon D600 have leaked out further confirming the 24.3MP FX format DSLR with 1080/24p HD video capture.  The specs indicate that it will carry several limitations as a low-end full frame camera.  Notably, the D600 is limited by a max shutter speed of 1/4000s, 1/200s sync-speed and a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400.  (The D7000 reaches up to 1/8000s shutter speed, while the D3200 and D5100 also max out at 1/4000s.)

The D600 will also be compatible with the new WU-1b wireless mobile adapter for connecting it with iOS and Android smartphones and tablets – just like the WU-1a for the Nikon D3200.

Sony VG900 Full Frame Camcorder Image Leak

September 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-VG900

The Sony NEX-VG900 is expected to be announced tomorrow as a full frame camcorder with the NEX E-mount. The VG900 is rumored to include a 24MP full frame sensor and capture 1080×1920 video recording at 24p/60p courtesy of the AVCHD 2.0 codec.

While an A-mount adapter is rumored to be included with the VG900, I’m curious as to which lenses will be available with this camera given the increase in sensor size over the current NEX-VG20.

Additional rumored specs include a 3? LCD, XGA OLED EVF and price tag of $3,300.

Canon was Originally Named After Kwanon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy

September 11, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon Logo History

Everyone knows the bright red Canon logo that we see plastered on the top of every camera or lens we buy.  Ever wonder how they came up with that brand name?

Canon initially began as Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in 1933. When the company began manufacturing cameras on a trial basis, it named them “Kwanon”, which was the name of the Buddist Goddess of Mercy.  The name “embodied the Company’s vision of creating the best cameras in the world.” [Read more…]
