Government Targets “People Taking Photos of Public Spaces” in Awareness Video

August 16, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWaPp-8k2p0&w=640&h=360]

Not only does this video win the cheesy award, but the advice it gives to the target audience (apparently those with drastically reduced IQs) flags warning signs for things both pro and amateur photographers do on a daily basis.

Not really what we need the government telling us right now given the current attitude of law enforcement to photographers in public spaces.

Sony A99 Video Up to 1080p at 120fps Rumored

August 16, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony A99 Rumors

If anybody is going to do it, it would be Sony.

The same company that jumped out in front with the NEX-VG10, then the FS100, and then the high frame rate FS700 that shook everything up could be stirring another big pot with a full frame camera that shoots 120 fps at 1080p.

Moreover, SonyAlphaRumors.com reports on potential specifications that include 1080p video at 50Mbps at 4:2:2 sampling, among other highly sought after video specs noted below.

Sony A99 Rumored Video Specs

  1. AVCHD2.0 format ,below 1080p it have the Bit rate of 50Mbps, 4:2:2 sampling
  2. 1080P with the highest 120fps,at 720P, the highest is 240FPS
  3. MP4 format still 35Mbps
  4. center focus all the lens can use the biggest Aperture. others still F3.5
  5. except P model, A,S model can also auto-focus but M model still MF
  6. 4 times zoom in during 1080P can be captured
  7. multi-recording can take a 2.4Megapixels during recording
  8. HDMI can be Non-destructive Output new shoe can fit the wireless(bluetooth) mic
  9. except the high speed model, other model Maximum recording time is 29min 59s
  10. Time code support

That reads more like a wish list than an actual spec sheet for a DSLR-style camera.  But if anyone would drop this in a sub-$5k DSLR, Sony would.  Expect lots more noise from Sony in the lead-up to Photokina 2012.

Photo Mechanic 5 Now Available

August 15, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Photo Mechanic 5

Photo Mechanic 5 is finally available as a full release.  Photo Mechanic has been the industry standard for image management in the photo journalist world for years.  Version 5 adds “significantly improved metadata handing capabilities” with all major IPTC fields supported.

Additionally, Camera Bits claims that it has made Photo Mechanic even faster, which sounds amazing given just how fast the prior version of Photo Mechanic is.

Photo Mechanic 5 is available for new users for $150.  Existing users can snag the upgrade for $90.  Additional sale prices are available at launch through August 20, 2012.  More details on Photo Mechanic’s website.

Canon SX160 IS

It looks like a pair of Canon’s new point and shoot models have found their way onto the web a little early.  The Canon PowerShot SX160 IS looks to feature a 16MP sensor along with a 16x optical zoom lens.  This should replace the current PowerShot SX150 IS, which sports a 14MP sensor, 12x zoom and 720p video. New Samyang Cinema Lenses

Samyang Optics has launched three new cinema lenses for Nikon and Canon mount HDSLRs.

  • 14mm T3.1 ED AS UMC

  • 35mm T1.5 ED AS UMC

These new cine lenses accompany the existing Samyang 8mm T3.8 Fisheye cine lens and feature “follow-focus gearing on focus and decoupled aperture. Such alterations allow the user to smoothly and quietly change focus and aperture / depth of field whist filming. Another feature is the visibility of the aperture and focus scale on the side of the lens.”

Sony’s New HVL60 Speedlight to Include Built-In LED for Video?

August 13, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony-Speedlight-Flash

This just makes sense.  With all the HDSLR cameras that have been introduced over the past few years, I sort of expected to see more of this sooner (I think Canon’s 320EX is the only first-party unit so far). [Read more…]
