DSLR and “Larger Sensor” Video Cameras Will Shake Things Up – Again

June 23, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Nearly two years ago, Canon changed the game (and, perhaps redefined the game) with the introduction of the 5D Mark II.  (And, while the Nikon D90 was the first DSLR to hit the scene with HD video capture, few will argue that Canon’s 5D Mark II was the real game changer.)  As the story goes, the addition of HD video to the 5D Mark II was almost an afterthought, which isn’t too far fetched of a story – given the rough implementation and numerous workarounds required to get a polished video out of the camera in those early firmware versions.

And then there was Reverie.

Reverie changed the way we looked at this new camera before we even knew what it was supposed to do.  I’ve heard Vincent Laforet recount the almost accidental acquisition of a prototype 5D Mark II a couple of times now.  He had the prototype camera in hand for roughly 72 hours and really made the most of that time.  That accidental spark ignited a huge flame in demand for the 5D Mark II – as well as a demand for knowledge to learn what it takes to do the same thing with a $2700 (at the time) camera.

A new niche market was born almost overnight. [Read more…]

The Best Camera Coming to Android Phones

June 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

I sat down to watch the Chase Jarvis and Zack Arias live interview session late one night last week.  While I watched a recorded version of it, they were taking Twitter questions during the live stream.  One question asked Chase whether The Best Camera app would be coming to Android.  I don’t recall his exact words, but Chase’s response made it clear that The Best Camera is in the works for Android.  No details of availability dates were spilled, and really, the comments about the app were just for a few seconds, but it appears to be on the way nonetheless.

I’m not sure where the video was at when Chase discussed this (it’s probably in the last 45 minutes or so), but feel free to add the time stamp in the comments if you catch it.

How to Create a Canon 18-55mm SuperMacro Lens

June 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

This is a pretty intense video that documents the disassembly and resurrection of a cheap Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens into a SuperMacro version of the same lens.  It’s not for the faint of heart.

Samsung NX10 Review

June 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Samsung NX10 is 14.6-megapixel camera offering an interchangeable lens design.  The NX10 follows the Micro Four Thirds system from Olympus and Panasonic as a DSLR-like design without a bulky mirror and optical viewfinder.  The NX10 uses a larger APS-C format sensor (with a 1.6x crop factor) as opposed to the Micro Four Thirds cameras (with smaller, 2x crop factor sensors).

The Samsung NX10 does a lot of things right in both form and function.  To see how it stacks up against the competition, read on. [Read more…]
