Sony A77 Announcement in July, Shipping October?

March 23, 2011 By Eric Reagan

More word of the Sony A700-replacement is trickling out.  This time, SonyAlphaRumors cites “trusted sources” that confirm a July announcement for the Sony A77 translucent mirror camera and an October 6, 2011 ship date for the camera.

While none of this is set in stone, it correlates with earlier statements from Sony that we’ll get a Summer 2011 announcement for the camera.  Additionally, previous info from Sony indicates that the A77 (if that is in fact the new camera’ s name) is expected to be released alongside a new kit lens and prosumer-grade speedlight. Speedliter’s Handbook Review

March 22, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Have you ever looked at those buttons on the back of your flash and wondered what exactly that they do?  What about understanding flash exposure compensation?  Or, high speed sync?  Want to dim the sun?

The Speedliter’s Handbook is a killer resource from Syl Arena that is primarily for Canon DSLR shooters who want to integrate Canon Speedlites into their repertoire.  That said, photographers using any other brand of gear will get their money’s worth out of this book. [Read more…]

New Sony Full Frame Camera in 2012?

March 22, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony A850 and A900

As Sony continues to tease the coming A700-replacement camera (presumed to be called the A77), rumors are building for a full-frame camera to follow-up the 24.6MP Sony A900 and A850.  Sony Alpha Rumors writes that its “trusted sources” have indicated an “amazing” full frame camera will be available from Sony in 2012.

Additional comments suggest that the full frame camera will use the translucent mirror technology found in the Sony A33 and A55.  Of course, the new A77 model will feature the translucent mirror; however, putting a full frame sensor behind the translucent mirror will be a first for Sony.  Given the recent developments with Sony’s SLT models, we should expect the coming full frame model to also capture at least 1080p HD video using AVCHD compression.

Ikan Elements Starter Fly Kit Review

March 15, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The Ikan Elements Starter Fly Kit is a compact and affordable (around $100) HDSLR rig.  While this kit is basic, it is surprisingly effective and will deliver enough performance for many HDSLR users who want to get some more stability out of their handheld work.

I love stuff that works and is cheap.  While stuff that works is a necessity and stuff that’s cheap is nice, put the two together and you get a real winner in my book. [Read more…]

Want Do You Want in the Nikon D800?

February 24, 2011 By Eric Reagan

A few weeks ago, I asked Canon users what they wanted to see in the Canon 5D Mark III (or whatever it’s called).  Better autofocus, enhanced AEB options and dual CF card slots were some of the popular requests for Canon.

The Nikon D700 is a bit of a different animal though.  It’s got great AF, but no video options.  The photo purists out there would probably be happy to keep it that way; however, I suspect that the inclusion of HD video capture on the D3s likely signals that the smaller-bodied, full frame D700 replacement will get a dose of HD video as well.
