Pentax’s New Speedlight in Development
Even though we are now in April, I am still digging through things I saw while at CES 2013 back in January. One of the interesting things for Pentax shooters was a new speedlight mockup on display in the Pentax booth.
The only official thing I can reveal about it is that Pentax was “showing a reference model of new flashes.” Boring, eh?
Well, you can see in the images below what Pentax might have going on with its new flash unit(s) at some point in the probably reasonably near future. Feel free to speculate away. And, if you spot something that jumps out at you, please let us know in the comments. [Read more…]

Fotodiox WonderBurst HSS8000 High-Speed Flash Trigger
Fotodiox recently launched the WonderBurst HSS8000 4-in-1 Radio Slave Trigger, which is a 1/8000 high-speed sync wireless remote flash trigger that Fotodiox claims is compatible with any camera flash or strobe.
The transmitter plugs into the camera to learn the camera’s specific delay time, which Fotodiox says allows it to get ahead of the second curtain sync, or the sync delay that most cameras have. As a result, the WonderBurst HSS8000 then removes flash sync limitations and will also work as a camera remote for AF remote triggering, continuous shooting and bulb mode.
The WonderBurst HSS8000 transmitter and receiver pair run $69.95 and are available here at Amazon.com.
Additional WonderBurst HSS8000 receivers run $39.95 and are available here on Amazon.com.

Fotodiox WonderBurst NEX Delivers Wireless Flash to NEX-3 and NEX-5 Series Cameras
Fotodiox has a new flash trigger system, the WonderBurst NEX, which features the unique NEX flash mount transmitter and a traditional hot shoe receiver. The wireless units feature 16 selectable channels and a 300′ range.
These are manual-only triggers and do not transmit TTL info and the manual flash sync speeds are limited to 1/160s. Still yet, it’s a very affordable system at only $40 for the transmitter and receiver package. Check it out here on Amazon.com.

I talked to Phottix about this and was told that they are actively evaluating Sony’s new move and when update us once their R&D team has had time to assess the new Sony system. In the mean, their are a whole lot of Sony Alpha shooters out their with the old Minolta mount that can make immediate use of these new triggers.

Lighting for Digital Photography by Syl Arena Due Next Month
Lighting for Digital Photography is Syl Arena’s next book, which is due out at the end of October. Syl wrote the excellent Speedliter’s Handbook on Canon Speedlites last year and I expect him to nail this one as well. (You can read my review of Speedliter’s Handbook here.)
Lighting for Digital Photography will go beyond just the Canon Speedlite system and also dig into lighting with Nikon speedlights, bigger strobes and continuous lights. Additionally, the book will cover use of light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, flags and gels.
Syl is a great teacher and Speedliter’s Handbook proved he knows how to teach in written words in addition to the workshops he’s known for.
Lighting for Digital Photography is currently available to pre-order for $14 on Amazon.com. This book would make a great stocking stuffer this holiday season for the photographer in your life.
