Avid Announces Free Version of Media Composer

April 12, 2015 By Eric Reagan

MediaComposer_Features_KeyFeatures2_enlarge

Avid has revealed its plans to release a free version of its popular Media Composer video editing software. Dubbed “Media Composer | First,” it will be scaled down in features but will still offer much of the experience for which Media Composer is popular.

Avid has not divulged the complete details on Media Composer | First; however, it will launch later this year. The available info from Avid highlights an in-app Marketplace for purchasing effects and stock footage. Additionally, Avid also highlights cloud connectivity, stating that all projects are stored in the cloud with media stored locally.

As Avid’s FAQ reinforces several times, Media Composer | First is targeted specifically at beginners. Avid makes effort to encourage anyone looking to become a serious editor to look at the full version Media Composer instead.

Avid Media Composer | First will officially launch sometime later in 2015.

Syrp Unveils the Genie Mini Time Lapse Device

April 6, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Syrp Genie Mini

The Syrp Genie is a fantastically simple device for creating complex time lapse sequences. I have a review forthcoming but, as a spoiler, I love it. The downside, however, is that it is rather bulky and costs over $800. [Read more…]

Blackmagic Fusion 7 VFX Software Now Running on Mac OS X

April 2, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Fusion 7 on Mac OS X

Late last year, Blackmagic Design unveiled Fusion 7 for Windows and made it free with a Studio version available for $995 with additional features. That was a big deal because it was previously a $5,000 application for high-end VFX work on Hollywood films like Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, The Amazing Spider-man 2 and The Hunger Games, as well as hit TV shows like Battlestar Galactica and Orphan Black.

Of course, we wondered at the time when Mac OS X support would be available. Well, it’s not quite on the market for Mac yet, but Blackmagic is already showing off support for OS X and will have more details available at NAB 2015 in just over a week.

Gymkhana 7 BTS with 100 GoPro HERO Cameras

March 29, 2015 By Eric Reagan

I love cars. I have been enamored with Ken Block’s Gymkhana series ever since it started a few years ago. What is Gymkhana, you ask? It is a few glorious minutes of magnificent hooning by a pro driver in a killer car and on a ridiculous course made of real-world locations. The latest edition takes place on the streets of Los Angeles.

What does that have to do with photography?

100 GoPro HERO cameras. Drones. RED EPIC cameras. The kind of stuff camera geeks are made of. [Read more…]

GoPro Goes Behind the Scenes of Furious 7

March 26, 2015 By Eric Reagan

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=672jKuyzkX4&w=700]

Aside from the fact that all new action films have to spoil the biggest and best sequences in trailers leading up to the films’ theatrical release (I’m looking at you Marvel and the Captain America: Winter Soldier elevator scene), this GoPro BTS look at the major stunt sequence from the upcoming Furious 7 is just plain awesome . . . and a little bit nerve wrecking.

No green screens. No CGI cars. Just strap cameras to real cars and people and drop the cars out of an airplane.
