June 1, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Storm chasers Brandon Sullivan and Brett Wright were in the middle of yesterday’s tornados in Oklahoma. And, by “in the middle”, I mean literally in the middle of a tornado. As you can see in the above video, they clearly got too close for comfort and barely escaped. [Read more…]

Guy Sticks a Smartphone Outside a Storm Shelter, Gets Up Close Footage of Moore, Oklahoma Tornado

May 23, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Charles Gafford took cover in his storm shelter as the massive tornado passed through Moore, Oklahoma. As the tornado approached his neighborhood, he stuck his smartphone outside of the shelter and captured some pretty stunning, close-range footage.

Before the first person complains, yes, he shot it vertically. And, yes, that’s normally frowned upon. However, I think we can all give Charles a free pass since he had the most powerful tornado on record coming right at him.

Below is a video of what Charles’ neighborhood looked like after the tornado passed and he emerged from his storm shelter. [Read more…]

Behind the Scenes: Capturing CrossFit in 480fps Slow Motion

May 21, 2013 By Eric Reagan

CrossFit “delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive.” There are thousands of CrossFit boxes around the world with everyday athletes numbering in the millions. One of the major components of CrossFit is regularly engaging in Olympic weightlifting. A large percentage of workouts contain some form of Oly lifting, as it’s called.

While strength is a component of progressing as an Oly lifter, technique is critical. Without solid technique, you are robbing yourself of your full potential. With that in mind, check out the above slow motion video of two-time Olympian Chad Vaughn (shot on the Sony FS700) as he performs a clean and jerk lift of 315lbs.

Producer, director and editor Heber Cannon of the CrossFit Media Team was kind enough to give us the rundown on the slow motion shoot with Chad Vaughn. Dig in for the full scoop from Heber below. [Read more…]

Sony 4K TVs Now Shipping in US

May 19, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Sony XBR-55X900A 55inch 4K TV

As we continue to question the need for 4K production across the spectrum, TV manufacturers are wasting no time pushing 4K TVs out to customers. Sony 4K TVs are shipping from Adorama and Amazon with prices starting at $5000. The Seiki 4K 50″ TV is much more reasonably priced at $1445 here at Amazon.com.

While the 4K content I have seen at CES and NAB this year has been gorgeous, I’m not quite ready to pull the trigger on a 4K set. Many HD broadcasters and cable channels continue to pump out 720p programming to content consumers across the nation. Additionally, the compression from cable providers on HD content is terrible. I can’t imagine how bad the compression will be on full 4K content when it starts coming down the content pipe.

Of course, those finishing productions in 4K resolution now have access to 4K TVs to view final products and/or demo content to clients.

Ahead of my full review of the Nikon D7100, I am sharing a bit a sample footage that I shot with the camera last week. There were a lot of great little scenes down by these tracks where the homeless drunks make their home.

The D7100 is a solid little camera for HDSLR video capture, albiet with a few quirks. [Read more…]

FxFactory PRO v4 Video Effects Plug-in Review

March 12, 2013 By Eric Reagan

FxFactory PRO v4

FxFactory PRO v4 is a plug-in for popular NLE editors like Final Cut Pro X, FCP 7 and Premiere Pro CS6. I have been using FxFactory PRO v4 for a few months now in both FCP X and Premier Pro CS6. While it also works in After Effects and Motion, my use has been limited to NLEs.

FxFactory PRO v4 uses the FxFactory plug-in manager for installation and updates. I have used several plug-ins with FxFactory and find it to be one of the easiest installation processes to use with NLE plug-ins. [Read more…]
