Vimeo Adds Monetization with Tip Jar, Pay-to-View Coming Soon

September 20, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/49684456 w=640&h=360]

Vimeo finally added a monetization mechanism for user videos. Vimeo’s new Tip Jar lets viewers donate funds on Vimeo Plus and Pro users’ videos.  The account holder keeps 85% of the donated tips, with the remaining 15% going to Vimeo.

The Tip Jar is already live and Plus and Pro members can activate the feature in their account now.  The Tip Jar is rolling out ahead of an upcoming pay-to-view service for Pro subscribers in 2013.  Both features could be quite a boon for indie filmmakers.

If you want to read more about it, Vincent Laforet has a great post on the new feature, as does Ryan Koo over at No Film School.

GoPro Camera Freefalls from 12,500 Feet Without Case

September 13, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU-KvtA20v8&w=640&h=360]

This skydiver lost his GoPro after he jumped out of the plane.  As he was climbing out of the plane, he bumped his helmet attachment on the door frame, which is what he suspects caused the GoPro case to loosen.

The camera plummeted 12,500 feet without a case and landed in the drop zone.  You can catch the landing at the 2:45 mark.  While on the ground, it even managed to capture their (safe) landings.  You can see the camera being recovered by a friend on the ground at the 6:45 mark.

Olympic Photographer Lens Cap Fail

August 2, 2012 By Eric Reagan

How many of you have ever left your lens cap on the camera and missed an important shot?  (I’m guilty.)

The photographer in the above video had the misfortune of making that mistake in front of TV cameras for the whole world to see.  I hope he still got a keeper or two after he figured out the malfunction.

SOLOSHOT Robotic Tripod Head Lets You Shoot Yourself

July 26, 2012 By Eric Reagan

SOLOSHOT is a new tripod-mounted automatic pan head that tracks subjects using a remote wristband.  It was built with capturing surfing in mind; however, it works for a ton of different types of moving subjects.

SOLOSHOT Key Features

  • Tracks at distances up to 2000 feet (half a kilometer).
  • The maximum pan speed is over 40 degrees per second.
  • The fastest object tested so far was a race car going 143 mph.
  • Batteries last 5+ hours.
  • A super bright tracking LED lets you know SOLOSHOT is pointing at you.
  • A security feature gives you an access point to lock your camera to the Base, and the tripod can be locked to stationary objects (the same as you would lock up a bicycle).
  • The pairing process allows multiple people to each use their own SOLOSHOT near each other.  Each Base will only follow the Armband that it is paired to.

Check out the demo video below that pretty well explains how SOLOSHOT works. [Read more…]
