Joe McNally’s New Book: ‘Sketching Light’

December 5, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sketching Light by Joe McNally

Joe McNally has a new book.  It’s called Sketching Light.  It’s pretty big at 432 pages.  And, it’s all about lighting.

He tells readers what works and what doesn’t via his let’s-see-what-happens approach, he shows how he sets up his shots with plentiful sketches and behind-the-scenes production shots….

I loved his earlier lighting book, The Hot Shoe Diaries, and I’m really looking forward to this new book.  I enjoy McNally’s stories and wit about as much as I do the information he provides.  Expect good stuff.

Sketching Light retails for $49.99; however, you can find it for $29.99 on Amazon at the time of this post.  There’s also a Kindle version of Sketching Light.

Fuji Instax Mini 50S

With the continual decline of film’s popularity, it’s great to see Fuji keeping the instant film train rolling.  The Fuji Instax cameras certainly have their niche (they’re one of the most searched for products on Photography Bay), and the new Instax Mini 50S should be a hot item this holiday shopping season. Illinois Wiretapping Law Continues to Be Abused by Police

December 2, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Just, wow.

I’m all for catching the bad guys out there, but this goes too far. As you can see in the above video, the guy who recorded police in public was charged with eavesdropping and faced up to 75 years in jail.  He won the initial case – the local judge dismissed it, citing that the Illinois law was unconstitutional (this should be a complete no-brainer here).

The Illinois legislature and attorney general are apparently idiots though, because the case is being appealed in an effort overturn the lower court’s dismissal.  [Read more…]

Unattended Camera Asks People to “Take a Photo”

November 28, 2011 By Eric Reagan

This social experiment made me smile.

The concept of this social experiment was simple. Leave a disposable camera in public and see how people reacted and/or used it. These are our results. Everyone has a different perspective.

Think Tank Photo Retrospective 30 Review

November 21, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Retrospective 30 (Pinestone)

The Think Tank Photo Retrospective line of camera bags are one of the newest series in their lineup.  It’s also one of the few bags that you can get in something other than black.  While I am certainly partial to black camera bags, I absolutely love the new Pinestone color on these Retrospective bags.

There are several different bags in the Retrospective lineup – from the Retrospective 5 (for compact and mirrorless kits with a couple of lenses and accessories) to the Retrospective 30 (for handling a more pro-level kit up to a DSLR with 70-200 attached plus extra lenses and bodies). [Read more…]

Introduction to Studio Lighting Video

November 20, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Intro to Studio Lighting

The below video is a solid introductory video to studio lighting put on at B&H Photo.

The presenter Joey Quintero is instrumental in developing and marketing B&H’s in-house Impact brand of lights and modifiers.  I own and still regularly use a pair of very affordable Impact EX100 monolights, which I previously reviewed here.
