Canon Lens Patent Shows 24-600mm f/2-3 Optics for 1″ Sensor

March 20, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon Patent for 24-600mm f2-3 Lens for 1-inch Sensor

Canon applied for a lens patent that was published back in December and featured a number of different optical embodiments, including a high-magnification zoom lens for a 1″ sensor format.

In the patent, the true technical measurements of the lens reveals an 8-180mm zoom with an aperture range of f/2-3. Adjusting these numbers for the roughly 3x crop factor of a 1″ sensor and rounding them off for marking purposes, you get a 24-600mm f/2-3 equivalent lens.  [Read more…]

Advanced Sharpening Technique Using Photoshop & Topaz Denoise

March 19, 2015 By Eric Reagan

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2aln2dLKdw&w=700]

Here’s a new sharpening technique that I had not seen before but works very well, particularly with low light images. It uses a combination of Photoshop with Unsharp Mask, Topaz DeNoise and then back to Photoshop for another pass with Smart Sharpen before using blend modes to apply the sharpened layer with the original color layer.

There are several examples of the technique in the video walk-through above.

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography – New Book

March 18, 2015 By Eric Reagan

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography is a new book from photographer Glenn Randall.

“In this book, there are discussions about exposure and composition—providing the best techniques to calculate exposure in even the most challenging lighting conditions. Randall also dives into compositional techniques, moving beyond the basics to discuss color, balance, and depth. He addresses key scientific concepts that impact landscape photography, such as geography, optics, vision, and psychology. Included in these discussions is how he uses contemporary technology to aid in his preparation, as well as coverage of digital capture techniques and post-processing to achieve spectacular landscape photographs.”

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography retails for $39.95; however, it is currently available for $28.03 on Amazon.com.

Is 360º Video and VR the Next Visual Media Boom?

March 17, 2015 By Eric Reagan

360-Video-and-Virtual-Reality-Next-Big-Thing

I’ll be honest, all of the recent 360º cameras haven’t really inspired me as I poured over the specs and read their press releases. However, I spent the better part of an evening last weekend looking at the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset and watching far too many reaction videos from first time users. The more I look at Oculus Rift, the more I want one.

My personal favorite reaction video:

Virtual Reality is on the cusp of being massively huge. It just needs a little push to make it explode. All of the experiences I have watched seem just a little too forced. The horror video game genre seems to me the most fitting for the experience but it is just not mainstream. [Read more…]
